Kotisuomessa

Kotisuomessa rantauduimme Kifskäriin saunomaan. Matkaa Allingesta Bornholmista Kifskäriin tehtiin 391 NM ja aikaa kesti 58 tuntia. Puolet ajasta purjehdittiin ja puolet ajettiin koneella. Sää oli koko ajan kaunis ja yöt valoisia, kun täysikuu paistoi kirkkaalta taivaalta.

Kifskärissä oli yksi vene meidän lisäksi ja sauna siellä maistui tosi mukavalta.

First port of call in Finland was Seabear Club harbour Kifskär. Distance covered from Allinge/Bornholm was 391 NM actually the longest leg in this trip. It took us 58 hours and half of that was motoring. Weather was nice and clear all the time especially the nights were beautiful and light with full moon shining from clear sky.

There was one boat except us in Kifskär. The sauna felt like heaven.
Today we do the final stretch to homeport.

Ölannds Södra Udde

On juuri ohitettu (29.8. 1640 Ruotsin aikaa). Tuuli SW/WSW 15-20 kn, meno vielä mukavaa.
Seuraava etappi Visbyn edusta huomenna sunnuntaina ehkä puolenpäivän aikoihin.

We have just passed to Southern end of Oland. Wind is SW/WSW 15-20 kn and sailing is still good. Next waypoint of Visby around noontime tomorrow.

Vauhdilla kotiin

Nyt ei ole kirjoitetultu paljoa, ikävästä syystä johtuen on kiire kotiin. Ostmarhoornista tulimme yhtä kyytiä Kielin kanavaan ja edelleen siellä Rendsburgiin 168 nm. Lyhyen yön jälkeen ja kun olimme tiputtaneet Timon rautatieasemalle lähdimme torstaina aamuvarhaisella kanavaa pitkin pohjoiseen ja suoraan Itämerelle. Noin 30 tunnin ja 200 nm jälkeen saavuimme Alligeen Bornholmiin, jossa nyt olemme. Tänään illalla tai huomenna aamulla lähdemme kohti saaristomerta. Utööseen on matkaa n. 360 mailia, jonne pitäisi ehtiä, ennenkuin tuulet kääntyvät pohjoiseen ja vastaisiksi.

 No time for writing as we have been busy travelling homewards. From Ostmahoorn we sailed in one leg to Kiel Kanal and stopped at Rendsburg to drop Timo to the railwaystation and further for flight home.
Early Thursday morning we continued the Canal further north and to the Baltic. Just a couple of hours ago we stopped at Allinge in Bornholm. We will continue tonight or early tomorrow morning towards home and Archipelago Sea to get there before the winds turn northerly.

Kiinni mudassa

Tänään oli oikeastaan viimeinen päivä kanavilla. Meillä on vielä jäljellä Lauwersoogin merisulku. Tullessamme kohti Oostmahornia väylällä oli kunnon mutapaakku/-matala, johon jäimme kiinni. Pääsimme onneksi omin voimin irti.

Huomenna on tarkoitus lähteä jälleen Pohjanmerelle ja kohti Brunsbutteliä ja Kielin kanavaa.

Today has been the last day in the Dutch Canals. Only the Lauwersoog sealock remains. When we were approaching Oostmahorn, we were stuck to the mud, which was in the middle of the fairway. Luckily we managed to get free with our own.

Tomorrow the plan is to go to the North Sea and further to Brunsbuttel and the Kiel Canal.

Edam - Lemmer - Leewaurden - Dokkum

Aikaa on kulunut, kun on viimeksi päästy nettiin. Nyt on ajeltu sisäjärvien Markermeer ja Ijselmeer poikki Friisinmaahan, jonka kaupungit ovat kaikki ihan mukavia. Lemmer on Ijselmeerin rannalla ja kun lähdimme sieltä lauantai-aamuna, tuntui, että koko väestö oli lähtenyt purjehtimaan. Me kuitenkin käännyimme pohjoiseen menevälle kanavalla, suurin osa meni järville purjehtimaan.
Leewaurdenissa päästiin ihan kaupungin keskustaan, vaikka aika siltojen aukioloajan suhteen meni tiukille.

Tänään ajelimme pienen pätkän (13 NM) Leewaurdenista Dokkumiin. Tuulta tasangolla oli 10 - 14 ms, joten vaikka koneella ajettiin, oli meno kylkimyyryä. Huomenna on tarkoitus mennä Ostmahoorniin odottamaan sääikkunaa Elbelle ja Kielin kanavalle.

Some time has passed since we had the internet for blogging. Now we have crossed the inland lakes Markermeer and Ijselmeer and reached the Friesland, where all the towns are pretty nice. Lemmer is on Ijselmeer and when we started Saturday morning, it looked like the whole population went sailing, most of them towards Ijselmeer as we headed to the north for the Friesian canals.

In Leewaurden we docked quite in the centrum allthough we almost missed the last bridge opening.

Today we only motored a small distance towards Dokkum. The wind in the plains was 10 - 14 ms so motoring wasn't that easy.  Tomorrow we plan to reach Ostmahoorn, where we'll wait for the proper weatherwindow for overnight sail to the Elbe and the Kiel Canal.

Tall Ships Race 2015

Kun ajelimme Ijmuidenista Amsterdamiin Nordzeekanaalia pitkin, veneitten määrä kohti Amsterdamia lisääntyi koko ajan. Pian oli pushpitissä  kiinni pari hinaajaakin. Marinat olivat tietenkin täynnä, joten tyydyimme vain "ajalehtimaan" muitten tuhansien alusten kanssa pitkin kanavaa katsellen hienoja purjealuksia. Veneitä oli tyypillisesti joka suunnassa metrin parin päässä.

Saatuamme ruuhkasta tarpeeksemme siirryimme Oranjesluisin kautta Markermeerille, joka on toinen/puolet Hollanin suuresta sisämerestä. Pienen purjehdusken ja koneajon jälkeen saavuimme Edamin viehättävään kaupunkiin.

When motoring along the Nordzeekanal from Ijmuiden to Amsterdam the amount of vessels small and large increased all the time. Soon we had a couple of tugs touching our pushpit. The Marinas in Amsterdam were packed so we had to join the throng and floated along the canal with thousands of other vessels watching the Tall Ships. Most of the time there was a boat one or two meters from us.

Having seen enough of this we locked out via Oranjesluis to Markermeer, which is half to large inland sea in Holland. After a couple of hours sailing and motoring we arrived to Edam, where we spent the nigth.

Jälleen merellä

Sisävesiltä siirryttiin jälleen Pohjanmeren puolelle, kun Staande Mastroute oli suljettu Amsterdamin eteläpuolella. Ekana merellä tuli vastaan Rotterdamin sisäänmenon ylitys. Paikalliselle VTS:lle piti raportoida sijaintinsam suuntansa ja nopeutensa, jonka jälkeen VTS antoi tarvittaessa ohjeita ylitykseen ja väistämisjärjestykseen. Liikennettä oli todella paljon ja väistämisoperaatioihin joutui monta kertaa. Purjehdustakin yritettiin, mutta tuuli oli suoraan takaa ja aalto hankala, joten turvauduimme koneajoon. Illaksi saavuimme Ijmuideniin Seaport Marinaan. Huomenna on tarkoitus jatkaa Amsterdamiin ja katsoa saammeko satamapaikan ja pääsemme katsomaan Tall Shippejä.

We left the inland waterways and continued along Northsea northwards as the Staande Mastroute was closed south of Amsterdam. First we crossed the Rotterdam entrance with all its traffic, which was very heavy. We had to report to the local VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), which if needed guided the yachts through safely. We tried also sailing, but as the wind was exactly from the back and the wave was reasonable, we uset the engine. In the evening we reached the Seaport Marina in Ijmuiden. Tomorrow we continue towards Amsterdam and hope to find a birth there and to go to see the Tall Ships Race participants.

Hollanin sisävesillä

Nyt on purjehdittu Hollannin sisävesiä pari päivää. Oikeastaan tämä muistuttaa saaristomeren purjehdusta. Tuulta voi olla paljonkin, mutta aalto ei nouse kovin isoksi. Seutu on Hollanin lounaisnurkka eli Seelanti, jossa jokien Schelde ja Maas suistot muodostavat leveitä vesistöjä. Niitten välillä oli sulkuja ja paljon jokilaiva/proomuliikennettä. Huvivenesuluissa oli usen n. 18 metrin silta vastassa, joten Duo jouduttiin ajamaan proomujen sekaan sulkuun. Yleensä pääsimme heti sulkuun, mutta proomujen potkurivirroissa oli  vähän pitelemistä.

Eilen tulivat Juha ja Timo veneeseen, kun lopulta Duo saatiin laituriin kiinni.  Willemstadissa käytiin Duo stuuvaamassa ja bunkraamassa. Willemstad on kiva vanha kaupunki, jossa on myös linnoitus keskellä kaupunkia, missä sijaitsi myös vierasvenesatama. Sieltä lähdettyämme avautimme moottoritiesillan ja jatkoimme mukavalla kryssipurjehduksella 7-10ms tuulessa. Nyt olemme paalupaikalla Pohjanmerelle vievän sulun lähellä. Huomenna ulos ja Ijmuideniin.

We have sailed a couple of days the inland waters of Holland. Really this is like archipelago (David hope the spelling is better than pronunciation) sailing at home, even with plenty of wind the sea is slight. The area is the Southwest corner of Holland or Sealand, where the estuaries of Schelde and Maas form wide areas of water. In between there are locks and plenty of commercial traffic. As the yacht locks usualla had a c. 18 metre bridge we had to go with the riverboats. The service was very good and we were admidded in immediately though .

Yesterday Juha and Timo arrived when we finally docked Duo. Today we visited Willemstad and replenished the stock. Willemstad in one of the old fort cities where the marina is in the moat. After that we continued and had to cut the traffic of a motorway by raising up the bridge and continued sailing with beating in a nice 7-10 ms wind. Now we are in pole position for Northsea to continue to Ijmuiden.

Maat vaihtuvat vauhdilla

Doverista lähdimme heti, kun satama-altaan portit avautuivat vuoroveden noustua riittävän korkealle. Kanaalin ylitys sujui joustavasti, ei tarvinnut väistellä laivoja liikenteenjakovyöhykkeellä, mitä nyt yksi sotalaiva väisti meitä. Purjehtiakin saatiin mukavalla slöörillä ja kun virtakin oli myötäinen, niin kyllä kelpasi.

Dunkerquesta lähdimme aamuyhdeksältä ajatuksena ajaa pari tuntia vastavirtaan ja saada sitten myötävirta. Jotenkin laskelmat pettivät ja myötävirta alkoi vasta neljän tunnin kuluttua. Tuuli oli tällä kertaa vastainen, joten vasta tuulikulman auettua loppumatkasta sammutimme koneen. Nyt olemme jo sisävesillä Vlissingenissä Hollannissa ja huomenna on tavoitteena Willemstad. Hollannin kanavat jäävät vähän vaillinaiseksi, kun juna tuhosi yhden sillan ennen Amsterdamia, mutta eiköhän me keksitä vaihtoehtoisia reittejä.

We left Dover immediately when the harbour gates were opened after the tide was high enough. Crossing the Canal was piece of cake except for one warship, which had to avoid us. We had also a nice sail running and the tide was with us.

When we left Dunkerque at 9 am, we thought to have tide against us for two hours, but for reason or other that turned for four hours. Also the wind was against us so sailing started only very late.  Now we are allready in protected waters in Vlissingen Holland. Tomorrow the target is Willemstad. The Mast Up Route will be decimated a bit, as a train smashed a bridge cutting the route to Amsterdam, but we will look for subsidiary routes.

Ensimmäinen kesäpäivä 15.8.2015

Aamulla oli Brightonin satama sumuinen, mutta sumu kuitenkin hälveni pian ja jäi vain matalalla oleva pilvikerros jäljelle. Vuorovesilaskelmia ei tällä kertaa tehty, silmäiltiin vain ylimalkaisesti. Tuuri kuitenkin kävi, sillä koko 65 mailin matka eli 9 tuntia oli myötävirtaa Doveriin. Iltapäivällä tuuli hellitti, mutta aurinko tuli vastaavasti näkyviin. Miehistö alkoi keventää asustusta kesäiseen suuntaan. Oli ensimmäinen päivä reissussa, kun veneen lämppäri ei ollut ollenkaan päällä.

Morning in Brighton Marina was foggy, which disappeared within an hour. We didn't do any careful tide calculations, only a rough look, and lucky we were. We went with the tide all the time to Dover, 65 NM and 9 hours. In the afternoon the wind went down but the sun came out and it was time for the crew to change to summeroutfit. This was also the first day that we didn't run the heater in the boat at all.

Portshmouth - Brighton

Portsmouthista lähdimme ihmisten aikaan eli kello kahdeksan aamulta eikä kello neljältä, niinkuin vuorovesi olisi edellyttänyt. Niinpä saimme melkein koko matkan vastavirtaa ja lokiin kertyi 40 nm matkalla 70 nm.
Onneksi meillä sentään oli kunnon vastatuuli. Brightoniin saavuttiin ennen kello kuutta, mutta satamatoimistosta kerrottiin, että ei kannata tulla sisään ennenkuin kaksi tuntia jälkeen alaveden eli runsaan tunnin päästä. Niinpä purjehdimme Brightonin edustalla ympyrää, kuin lentokoneet konsanaan Heatrowhin laskeutuessa ruuhka-aikaan.

Tänään tuli David käymään tuoden mukanaan Wendyn leipoman herkullisen Dandycaken (toivottavasti kirjoitettu oikein). Sadekin lakkasi sopivasti iltapäivällä, joten lähdimme tutustumaan Brightonin nähtävyyksyyn: Palace Pier, The Lanes ja North Laine. Kyllähän Brightonissakin päivä pari kuluisi mukavasti.

We started from Porthsmouth in decent time 8 am allthough according to tidetables we should have started at 4 am to catch the favourable tide. So we had tide against us most of the time, but fortunately it was compensated by 7-8 ms wind from the nose. We arrived at Brighton before 6 pm, but due to silted entrance we couldn't enter until an  hour later when water level was high enough. We utiliced that time well  sailing circle at the Brighton seafront in 10-12 ms wind. That was fun.

Today David arrived bringing Wendy's excellent Dandycake (?). Thanks Wendy. After tea the weather turned nice and we had a walking tour around Brighton: Palace Pier, The Lanes and North Laine.

Plymouth - Weymouth - Portsmouth

Olemme näämä olleet suu-retkellä, kun paikkakunnan nimiä tarkastelee. Plymouthista Weymouthiin sujui purjehtien, tosin sateen saattelemana ja näkyvyys oli välillä tosi onnetonta. Weymouth on kiva rantakaupunki, lempinimi Costa del Dorset. Paljon näkyi lomanviettäjiä.

Weymouthista suuntasimme kohti Isle of Wightia tavoitteen Englannin ja ehkä ainakin Euroopaan purjehduskeskus Cowes. Koska meneillään oli kuitenkin Cowes Week-purjehduskisa, meillä ei ollut siellä tilaa ja päädyimme Portsmouthiin, joka sekin on ihan kivan näköinen paikka ja uusi tuttavuus.

We have seen many -mouths on our voyage. From Plymouth to Weymouth we sailed almost all the way allthough the rain made visibility sometimes noexistent. Weymouth is known as Costa del Dorset and there was plenty of things happening by the beach.

From Weymouth we headed towards the Isle of Wight Cowes as our destination. Unfortunately there was no room for us as the Cowes Week was on. We ended to Portsmouth, which is also a nice place.

Milford Haven - Plymouth 200 NM

Etelätuulet helpottivat torstaina ja tilapäinen korkeapaineen selänne toi tilalle länsituulet. Matka Plymouthiin kesti 31 tuntia ja maileja kertyi n. 200. Bristolin kanaalissa vanha Atlantin maininki oli parimetristä ja aallon väli noin 50 - 100 metriä: tuli mieleen ylitys Karibialle. Melkein puolet matkasta päästiin purjehtimaan. Bristolin kanaalissa ei ollut liikennettä käytännössä ollenkaan, mutta kun Land's End (Englannin läntisin kärki) lähestyi, niin alkoi jo näkyä veneitä tai siis kulkuvaloja, kun tulimme sinne keskellä yötä. Sää oli muutenkin hieno, aurinko paistoi sekä torstaina että perjantaina.

Plymouth oli aikanaan Royal Navyn tärkeimpiä tukikohtia ja edelleen täällä on Royal Navy Davenport tukikohta. Huvivenesatamia täällä on toistakymmentä ja huviveneitä niissä varmasti tuhansia.

On Thursday the longstanding southerly winds eased due to a high pressure ridge coming in. We left Milford Haven targeting Plymouth. The voyage took 31 hours and was alltogether 200 nm. The old see from Atlantic was around 2 metres high and the wavelength 50-100 metres reminding me from the 2006 crossing to the Caribbean. We sailed almost half of the way and the weather was corgeous and sunny both on Thursday and Friday. There was not much traffic in the Bristol Channel, but when approaching the Land's Edn we startged seeing ships and other yachts.

Plymouth used to be one of the key bases of the Royal Navy and it still accommodate the Roayl Nave Davenport base. There must be over ten marinas and thousands of pleasure boats around.

Weatherbound in Milford Haven

Jo Milford Haveniin tullessa tiesimme olevamme täällä useamman päivän kovan etelätuulen takia. Maanantaina kävimme Cardiffissa. Tiistaiksi ja keskiviikoksi vuorasimme auton ja katselimme Pembrokeshiren nähtävyyksiä. Tiistaina kävimme Fisguardissa, joka on pieni kiva kalastajakylä. Lisäksi kävelimme noin 10 kilometria Pembrokeshire Coastal Pathia, jonka kokonaispituus on n. 300 kilometriä. Lisäksi kävimme katsomassa St Davidsin katedraalia, joka lienee Britannian vanhin. Täten St David's on city, jossa tosin on vain alle 2000 asukasta. Tänään kävimme Tenbyssä, joka myös on pieni nätti entinen kalastajakylä.

Säätiedoitukset lupaavat huomiseksi länsituulta, joten toivottavasti pääsemme liikkeelle.

Already arriving at Milford Haven we knew that we will be weatherbound a few days due to heavy southerly winds. On Monday we visited Cardiff. Tuesday we rented a car for two days and drove around in Pembrokeshire. Tuesday we visited Fisguard which is a tiny nice fishing village. We also walked along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path for 10 kilometres the total length of which is over 300 km. We also visited St David's, where is the located the oldest cathedral in Britain. Hence it is also a city with its less than 2000 inhabitants. Today we visited Tenby, which is also a nice small fishing village.

Having sailed in Scotland we obviously have a fair amount the water of life onboard. It seems though that the portions given to the crew are based on Scottish measures and there are good chances that some of the liquid will be left when Duo arrives home. The crew hasn't mutinied yet though.

Cardiff 3.8.

Villen viikko tuli täyteen. Hyvin nuorimies sopeutui merielämään alkuhankaluuksien jälkeen. Kiitos Villelle osallistumisesta purjehdukseen ja ansiokkaasta kuvauksesta. Me muut lähdimme Villen kanssa yhtä matkaa junalla Cardiffia kohti, josta hän jatkoi lentoasemalle ja me jäimme tutustumaan kaupunkiin.

Kävimme Cardiffin linnassa, jonka ensimmäiset versiot oli rakennettu parituhatta vuotta sitten. Lisäksi kävimme kierroksen Millenium Stadionilla, joka oli rakennettu Cardiff Arms Park stadionin tilalle Welsh Rugby Unionin pyhätöksi. Lauantaina siellä on jälleen 75000 katsojaa, kun Wales kohtaa Irlannin.

It was time for Ville to head home. He became a real seaman despite some early problems. Thanks once more for Ville of the week. We others joined Ville for the train trip to Cardiff to see the City and Ville continued to Heatrow.

First was a visit to Cardiff Castle the first version of which was erected about two thousend years ago.
Secondly we had a tour of Millenium Stadium, which was built to replace the somewhat smaller Arms Park Stadium for the home of Welsh Rugby. Again on Saturday 75000 Welshmen and Irish will come to cheer to their respective teams.

Over the Irish Sea

Koska säätiedot näyttivät suotuisilta ja myöhemmin luvattiin kovenevia ja vastaisia tuulia, lähdimme lauantaiaamuna Howthista kohti Walesia ja Milford Havenia. Ensimmäiset kuusi tuntia sujuivat mahtavassa myötävirrassa ja tuulikin oli suotuisa, niin meno oli tosi mahtavaa. Totuus kuitenkin palasi ja virta (max 4 kn) kääntyi vastaiseksi ja tuulikin teki saman, joten käynnistimme koneen ja pinnistelimme seuraavat kuusi tuntia pikkuhiljaa eteenpäin koneella. Noin 20 tuunnin ja 120 merimailin jälkeen saavuimme Milford Haveniin aamuhämärissä.

Due to the positive weatherforecast and approaching lows we left Howth Saturday morning for Wales and Milford Haven. The first six hours the wind was favourable and the tidal stream was with us and we were logging 10 knots over ground for long periods. Reality struck though when both wind and stream turned. The next six hours we struggled with the engine towards our destination. After 20 hours and 120 nautical miles we arrived at Milford Haven in the early morning hours.

Dublin 31.7.

Howth oli ihan kiva satama, suojainen ja hyvät palvelut sekä HYC:n klubin käyttöoikeus. Howthista otimme junan Dublinin keskustaan, missä kävellen tutustuimme kaupunkiin: Trinity College, Liffyn rannat ja Temple Bar sekä vanha viikinkialue. Guinness ja Jamesonin viskitislaamon jätimme tosin väliin.

Howth was a very nicer Marina, good abblutions and the HYC clubhouse and bar at our disposal. We took the DART-train to Dublin, where we walked all over the city: Trinity College, the strand of Liffy, Temple Bar and the Old Viking are. Guinness and the Jameson Distillery we skipped though.
